Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to perform the duties related to betting ring and internet wagering activity of a betting supervisor at race meetings. The unit applies to authorised racing officials who apply high-level mathematical skills to effectively monitor and interpret wagering information associated with greyhound, harness or thoroughbred race meetings.Greyhound, harness and thoroughbred racing are strictly regulated throughout Australia. All stewards are appointed under the rules of racing by the relevant controlling body or Principal Racing Authority (PRA). Users are advised to check with the relevant PRA for requirements. No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Gather information relating to market prices and fluctuations
  • Interpret previous race performance of greyhounds or horses
  • Determine the expected form of the racing greyhounds or horses
  • Collect, interpret and report betting information to stewards
  • Monitor, note and report fluctuations and anomalies in prices to stewards prior to race
  • Monitor bookmakers' telephone calls
  • Monitor internet wagering activity
  • Observe activities in betting ring and surrounds

  • Clarify wagering disputes
  • Investigate wagering disputes according to the rules of racing and legislative requirements
  • Resolve or refer wagering disputes to stewards
       
Element: Inspect betting ledgers and other records of transactions
  • Compare accepted wagers with legislative requirements
  • Review bookmakers' ledgers and other records for compliance with rules of racing and legislative requirements
  • Compile and present evidence of suspected non-compliance by bookmakers or their employees to chief steward or other designated personnel
  • Seize and receipt ledgers and other documentation for further investigation if non-compliance is suspected

Assessment Tasks
